Did You Know?

The Wind Waker was originally the first story of the Zelda series
Waking the Wind
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker was actually supposed to tell the very first story in the Zelda series. Chronologically, it was originally planned to fit right at the beginning of the Zelda timeline.

In Nintendo Power's E32002 special (issue 158), some of the magazine's editors sat down with Nintendo's director of game development Shigeru Miyamoto and president Satoru Iwata. During the interview, this Wind Waker question was brought up...

Nintendo Power: Where does the latest Zelda game fall into the series' mythology? Early in the series or after Majora's Mask?

Shigeru Miyamoto: This is the very first Zelda story. If all we ever did was try to continue the story, we'd lose some of the interest. It's fun to jump back and forth.

In its final build, however, The Wind Waker took place later in the series, stretching after the events of even Ocarina of Time.
